(in) hörweite can be succinctly described as a study of oscillations and resonance. Elisabeth Harnik skillfully explores the subtle sounds that are just within hearing distance, necessitating attentive listening into the instrument’s sound. Primarily, these oscillations and sounds emerge through various forms of overlays: sounds juxtaposed against one another, individual tones sustained for extended periods, and layering and partial removal of sounds. What becomes audible is the instrument’s reaction, a form of self-resonance within the sound body. This effect is intensified and rendered even more transparent in repetitions, where the piece is performed with a small scordatura. While the notation remains consistent, a different response from the
instrument is achieved, creating a new sonic image against a constant backdrop.
